From Pet Photo to Personalized Gear: Getting It Right Took Some Trial and Error

There’s something different about creating something with your own pet on it. A funny saying on a hat is great—but when that design is based on the dog or cat waiting for you at home, it becomes personal.

That’s exactly what I’ve been working on at Knuckle Head Creations: turning customers’ pet photos into custom artwork that can be used on leather patch hats and personalized tumblers.

And I’ll admit, getting here took some trial and error.

It Started With an Idea

The idea sounded simple enough: take a photo of a pet, turn it into artwork, and put that artwork on a product.

Simple, right?

Not quite.

A photograph that looks great on your phone doesn’t automatically translate into a design that will look good engraved onto leather. There can be too much detail, not enough contrast, or features that disappear when the image is converted for engraving.

I experimented with different ways of simplifying the images while still keeping the little details that make your dog look like YOUR dog.

The eyes. The ears. The markings. That goofy expression.

Those are the things that matter.

Then Jack Jack Became My Test Subject

One of the designs I’m especially happy with is Jack Jack.

Using his photograph, I started experimenting with turning his face into artwork that could become a personalized product. We eventually created a “Bad to the Bone” design with Jack Jack as the centerpiece and his name incorporated into a dog bone.

That was when everything started clicking.

Instead of simply putting a photograph on something, I could build an entire design around the pet’s personality.

A tough-looking dog might get BAD TO THE BONE.

A spoiled little princess might need DADDY’S GIRL.

The neighborhood troublemaker might deserve CERTIFIED TROUBLEMAKER.

And, of course, we can personalize the design with the pet’s actual name.

Hats Were Only the Beginning

Once I saw how good the personalized pet artwork could look on a leather hat patch, another idea immediately came to mind:

Why stop at hats?

I started experimenting with using the same concept for tumblers.

That opened up a completely different canvas.

Instead of one small patch, a tumbler wrap gives me room to build an entire design around the pet—paw prints, bones, sayings, textures, the pet’s name, and other elements that match their personality.

And after all the experimenting, adjusting, starting over, and trying again, I’m really happy with the results.

The Jack Jack tumbler design was one of those moments where I looked at it and thought:

Yep. That’s what I was trying to create.

Your Pet. Your Design.

That’s the part I’m most excited about.

These don’t have to be generic dog or cat designs.

Send me a good photo of your pet, and I can create something specifically for them.

Your pet can become the star of a custom leather patch hat, a personalized tumbler, or potentially both. We can add their name and build the artwork around their personality.

Funny, sweet, sarcastic, spoiled, tough, goofy—whatever fits them.

Because anyone can buy a hat with a dog on it.

But a hat with your dog on it?

That’s different.

And after all the trial and error it took to figure out how to turn a pet photo into something I’m proud to put on a product, I’m excited to start making these for other pet owners.

Your pet already has the personality. Now we can put it on something.
